School Counseling

What is SEL?

Social Emotional Learning, or SEL, helps us develop the skills we need for every area of life, from academics and careers, to healthy relationships and overall well-being—skills like managing our emotions, showing empathy, communicating effectively, and making good choices.

Our lessons align with the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) model and focuses on developing competency in 5 areas: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. SEL classes focus on building specific skills around conflict management, self regulation, respecting identity and understanding and respecting boundaries.

How Does a Student See the School Counselor?

If a student would like to see the school counselor and it is not urgent, they should let their teacher know. Requests will be followed up on as soon as possible.

If a student would like to see the school counselor and it is urgent, they should ask their teacher for permission to leave the classroom. Depending on both the counselor and the student's availability, they can expect to be seen in the moment, same day, or by a scheduled time.

How Does a Parent or Staff Member Meet with the School Counselor?

Parents, guardians and staff members are welcome to meet with the school counselor and are asked to make appointments in advance, to ensure that the school counselor will be available. You may call the school or email the counselor to set-up a meeting. Meetings can be in-person, over the phone or via Google Meets.

Why Would a Student See the School Counselor?

A. Academic/Educational Counseling – Students sometimes have academic problems in areas including study habits, expectations, time management and organizational skills.  A counselor may assist students in exploring solutions to these and other academic problems.

B. Personal/Social Counseling – A counselor may assist students to develop skills to interact more effectively with others, identify personal values, talents and interests and transition into and out of middle school. The counselor will also provide support and assistance to students and families in crisis and can provide referrals to outside agencies for more extensive assistance including counseling, evaluations or treatment.

C.  Career/Vocational Counseling – As a middle school counselor, the school counselor can assist students in the early stages of career exploration.

Individual counseling with the school counselor will be short-term in nature. If in the course of meeting with a student, issues present that would benefit from more long-term counseling, the school counselor will recommend and assist families in connecting with resources and services to help.

Consultation with Families and Staff

Often the job requires that a counselor make contact with a student's family and/or the staff. Much of this work is done informally through impromptu phone calls, emails or classroom conversations. Families and staff are always welcome and encouraged to reach out to the counselor with questions and concerns.
